“All measures taken to pressure Havana are completely illegal and blatantly violate the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. We strongly condemn this inhumane and illegitimate practice,” she said.
The diplomat noted that Russia has consistently called for Cuba’s removal from the U.S. list and for the lifting of the blockade that the U.S. has maintained against the Caribbean nation for more than 60 years.
“It is evident that Washington seeks a regime change by any means to interfere in the affairs of a sovereign country,” Zakharova said, adding that Russia is confident that Cuba can continue developing its international economic relations despite all the obstacles imposed by Washington.
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio reiterated the Cuban willingness to engage in dialogue with the U.S. based on respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.
During a press conference marking the tenth anniversary of the thaw in bilateral relations, he emphasized that his country would not sever dialogue or cooperation in certain areas. Fernandez de Cossio expressed concern over the U.S. decision to keep Cuba on the list and highlighted the destructive capacity of the U.S. government.
“Washington has proven to be very powerful and to have an extremely effective destructive capacity to cause harm. In addition to taking measures to protect our population and ensure our self-defense, we know that we will be able to survive,” he said.
On December 12, the U.S. State Department announced its decision to keep Cuba on the dubious list of nations allegedly sponsoring terrorism. This pressure mechanism has also been applied to nations such as North Korea, Iran, and Syria.
